The Spiritual Ego
You've done the work.
The meditation. The breathwork. The books. The retreats. The readings. Higher Consciousness
You can talk about energy, frequency, and the soul with ease.
So here's the question no one on the spiritual path wants to ask:
What if your ego came with you?
Because the ego doesn't disappear when you start to awaken.
It adapts.
As I shared in The Ego and Mental Body Entanglement, the ego's job is to keep you safe. And when it can't stop you from walking a spiritual path, it does the next best thing.
It takes over the path.
It learns the language. It adopts the practices. It builds a brand new identity: the spiritual one. The awakened one. The one who knows.
And suddenly, the ego isn't blocking your growth anymore.
It's disguised as it.
It tells you you're more evolved than the people around you.
It tells you pain is "just low vibration," so you never have to feel it.
It tells you you're healing, while quietly keeping everything exactly the same.
This is the spiritual ego.
And it's the most convincing disguise the ego will ever wear, because it looks exactly like the thing you've been searching for.
The Ego Disguised as Awakening
The ego has always needed to be somebody.
Before the spiritual path, it might have been the successful one. The strong one. The one who had it all together.
Now it has a new role.
The awakened one.
And it plays that role beautifully.
It notices who's "still asleep." It feels a quiet superiority when someone doesn't understand energy, or higher consciousness or the soul. It keeps score: how long you've meditated, how many courses you've taken, how high your vibration is compared to everyone else's.
It sounds like awareness.
I've just outgrown certain people.
They're not on my level yet.
I can't be around that kind of energy.
But ask yourself:
Whose voice is that? Your soul's, or your ego's?
Because the soul doesn't rank.
The soul doesn't need to be more evolved than anyone. It doesn't need to be seen as wise. It simply is.
Only the ego needs to be special.
The moment your spirituality separates you from others instead of connecting you to them, the ego is the one wearing the robes.
And feeling superior is only its first trick.
The second one is far more dangerous.
Spiritual Bypassing: Rising Above What You Won't Feel
Imagine something painful happens. A betrayal. A loss. A deep disappointment.
And instead of feeling it, you hear:
Everything happens for a reason.
I'm choosing to stay in a high vibration.
I've already forgiven them. I'm sending them love and light.
This was just a lesson my soul chose.
It all sounds spiritual. Evolved. Even true.
But underneath, the hurt is still there.
It hasn't been healed. It's been skipped.
This is spiritual bypassing, and it's one of the ego's favourite tools, because it gets to protect you from pain while convincing you that you're growing.
Nothing feels more threatening to the ego than a raw, unfelt emotion. So it hands you spiritual language to rise above it.
But you can't rise above what you haven't released.
The emotion doesn't disappear. It goes underground, into the subconscious, where it keeps creating the same reality. The same patterns. The same relationships. The same hurts.
Just with a spiritual explanation attached.
Love and light can't reach a wound you refuse to look at.
And once the ego has learned it can hide your pain behind spiritual words, it realizes it can hide something much bigger.
Your entire life.
How the Ego Hijacks Your Spiritual Path
The ego doesn't just join your spiritual path.
It starts steering it.
It chooses the practices that feel comfortable and avoids the ones that would actually change you. It collects teachings instead of living them. It keeps you searching for the next course, the next modality, the next breakthrough.
Because as long as you're always preparing to transform, you never actually have to.
I'm not ready for that yet.
I need to do more work on myself first.
I'll know when the timing is aligned.
It even uses your intuition against you.
Fear becomes a feeling that it's not meant to be.
Avoidance becomes honouring my energy.
Staying stuck becomes trusting divine timing.
And because it's all wrapped in spiritual language, you never think to question it.
The ego doesn't need to stop your awakening. It only needs to control it.
And it has two phrases it uses more than any others.
"I'll Wait for Divine Timing"
It might be the most spiritual-sounding sentence the ego has ever learned.
I'm not going to force it.
When it's meant to happen, it will.
I'm waiting for divine timing.
It sounds so trusting. So surrendered. So wise.
But be honest:
How long have you been waiting?
A year? Five? Ten?
For the relationship. The career change. The move. The business. The healing.
Here's the truth the ego doesn't want you to hear:
Divine timing is real. But it isn't passive.
Divine timing is the moment the universe meets you in motion. It's the door that opens because you were already walking toward it. The opportunity that appears because you said yes to the step before it.
It doesn't arrive while you sit still, waiting for a sign that it's finally safe.
That isn't divine timing.
That's the ego's timing.
And the ego's timing never comes. To the ego, it will never be the right time to do something new. The future is unknown, and the unknown is never safe.
So it takes fear and renames it surrender. It takes avoidance and renames it trust.
And you feel spiritual for staying stuck.
The ego waits for the fear to go away. The soul moves while the fear is still there.
And the moment you take one step, however small, you'll often discover something startling.
Divine timing was never waiting on the universe.
It was waiting on you.
"I Need to Do More Healing"
Once I heal this, then I'll date again.
Once I clear this, then I'll start the business.
Once I release this, then I'll finally be ready.
And so you heal.
And heal.
And heal some more.
Another session. Another course. Another layer. Another wound to work through.
So let me ask you:
Where are you trying to reach?
What does "healed enough" look like? How will you know you've arrived?
If you can't answer that, there's a reason.
The ego has moved the finish line.
The ego is protecting the past you. The version of you who once felt not enough. And the spiritual ego has found a brand new way to keep that belief alive:
You're not healed enough.
Same wound. New language.
As long as there's always one more thing to heal, you never have to step into the life you're healing for. Healing becomes the place you hide. Safe. Familiar. Productive-looking.
It even becomes an identity. The one who's healing.
But healing was never meant to be where you live.
Healing is meant to free you to live.
When healing happens at the surface, you circle the same wound from different angles, peeling layer after layer, while the root stays in place. The pattern returns. And the ego says, See? More healing needed.
When healing happens at the root, in the subconscious and super subconscious where the original protection was created, the pattern is released at its source. The ego no longer needs to guard it.
You stop working on yourself.
And you start living as yourself.
You were never meant to be finished.
You were meant to be free.
The Test: Is It Your Soul, or Your Ego in Robes?
The words are the same.
The soul can say everything happens for a reason. So can the ego.
The soul can say I'm setting a boundary. So can the ego.
The soul can say I trust divine timing. So can the ego.
You can't tell the difference by listening to the words.
You tell the difference by watching what the words do.
Every spiritual phrase either moves you toward life or away from it. And there are three places you can see it.
1. Does it bring you closer to feeling, or does it numb you?
The soul never asks you to skip an emotion.
When the soul says everything happens for a reason, it comes after you've felt the grief, the anger, the heartbreak. It arrives as meaning once the emotion has moved through you. It feels like a softening.
When the ego says it, it comes instead of feeling. It arrives in the first moment the pain appears, like a lid slammed down on a pot. It feels like a shutdown.
The soul's truth comes through the feeling. The ego's truth goes around it.
2. Does it bring you closer to connection, or does it separate you?
The soul connects. Always. To yourself, to others, to life.
When the soul sets a boundary, it's so you can stay in relationship honestly. This is what I need so I can show up fully. It often brings you closer, because there's truth between you now.
When the ego sets a boundary, it builds a wall. It pushes people away, and you end up a little more alone, and a little more "right."
The same with I've outgrown them. From the soul, it's quiet, loving, and without judgment. From the ego, it comes with a feeling of being above them.
The soul separates without superiority. The ego can't separate without it.
3. Does it move you forward, or keep you exactly where you are?
This is the clearest test of all.
When the soul trusts divine timing, you're still in motion. Taking steps. Saying yes. Showing up.
When the ego trusts divine timing, you're sitting still. And somehow the timing is never right.
The soul says I'm not ready, and then gets ready.
The ego says I'm not ready, and stays not ready for years.
Look at your life, not your language.
If you've been saying the same spiritual phrase for five years and nothing has changed, the phrase isn't guidance.
It's a hiding place.
Your Body Already Knows
If you're still unsure, go beneath the mind entirely.
Say the phrase out loud and notice what happens in your body.
When it's the ego, you'll often feel relief. A quick exhale. Phew, I don't have to deal with that. Or tightness. A defensiveness. A need to be right.
When it's the soul, you'll feel peace. An openness. A spaciousness. Even if what it's asking of you feels uncomfortable, there's a steadiness underneath.
The ego gives you relief. The soul gives you peace.
Relief comes from escaping something.
Peace comes from facing it.
The Question That Cuts Through It All
Is this protecting the past me, or freeing the present me?
The ego will always protect who you were.
The soul will always lead you to who you are.
If you recognized yourself in any of this, don't let the ego turn this into another reason to judge yourself.
Seeing it is the first sign that something deeper is waking up.
The ego can't see the spiritual ego. Only the soul can.
How to Break Free from the Spiritual Ego
1. Ask who's speaking.
When a spiritual thought comes up, pause and ask: Is this my soul, or my ego using spiritual words?
The soul is calm, humble, and connecting. The ego is defensive, comparing, and separating.
2. Let yourself be ordinary.
The spiritual ego needs to be special. So practice being human. Not more evolved. Not further along. Just here.
There's enormous freedom in no longer needing to be the awakened one.
3. Feel before you transcend.
When pain comes, don't rush to the lesson. Feel it first. The lesson will still be there, and it will mean far more once the emotion has actually moved through you.
4. Stop collecting, start living.
Before you look for the next course or teaching, ask: What have I already learned that I'm not yet living?
Transformation isn't found in more information. It's found in embodiment.
5. Take the step before the timing feels right.
Divine timing meets you in motion. Choose one small step you've been waiting on, and take it while the fear is still there.
6. Release it at the root.
The spiritual ego is still the ego. And it's still protecting the past you, the version of you who once felt unsafe, unseen, or not enough. Becoming "spiritual" was simply its newest way to feel safe.
That original wound isn't living in your practices or your beliefs. It's held in the subconscious and super subconscious, the soul level.
This is where I work. When we find what the ego has been protecting and release it at its source, the ego no longer needs a disguise.
And what's left isn't a more spiritual version of you.
It's the real one.
The Path Was Never About Becoming Someone
The ego will turn anything into an identity. Even awakening.
But awakening was never about becoming someone more evolved, more enlightened, or more spiritual.
It was about no longer needing to be anyone at all.
The soul doesn't need a title. It doesn't need to be seen. It doesn't need to rise above your pain. It doesn't need to wait, and it doesn't need to be fixed.
It's simply waiting beneath the robes.
